Assistant coach Stephanie Bernthal joined the Spider staff prior to the 2014 season. Bernthal came to Richmond following two seasons as the head coach at Bethany College.
At Bethany, Bernthal was charged with launching the Bison field hockey program, the lone collegiate field hockey program in West Virginia. She coordinated all aspects of the start-up program without an assistant coach, while running the United States Field Hockey Futures program in Pittsburgh.
Prior to her stint at Bethany, Bernthal was the first assistant at Christopher Newport University from 2011-2012 and helped the Captains finish 12-6. The program was ranked as high as 17th in the country and reached the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid. In addition to her work at Christopher Newport, Bernthal was the Director of Club Events for the StickPower Field Hockey Club in Newport News, Virginia, and served as a coach with the United States Field Hockey Futures program at various sites in the Virginia Beach area. She began her coaching career at Stow-Monroe Falls High School in Stow, Ohio, in 2009.
Bernthal graduated from Kent State University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology where she was a four-year starter on defense. She captained the 2008 Golden Flash squad to a top-20 national ranking, Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season championship, MAC Tournament championship, and NCAA appearance. Bernthal also led the 2008 defensive unit to a stingy 1.16 goals-against average. She was an All-Region (West) and two-time All-MAC selection, including First-Team honors in 2008. Bernthal excelled in the classroom as well, garnering ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Squad honors in 2008.
Bernthal earned a Masters of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Kent State in 2011 and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Ohio.
