UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball program welcomed Big Ten foe, Michigan State to Pitt Field on Saturday afternoon as part of the annual Spider Invitational.

Despite a hard fought battle between the Spiders and the Spartans, Richmond dropped the contest, 13-4.

Kyle Adams led the Spiders at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBI.

Michigan State threatened early, but it was all Richmond out of the gates. Adams drove in the first Spider run when he singled to right center bringing in Vinny Capra.

The Spiders added to their lead in the home half of the second when D.J. Lee found a hole on the right side to drive in Kyle Schmidt to give Richmond a 2-0 advantage.

Richmond continued to stifle any Michigan State opportunity, but in the fourth the Spartans were able to get a run back off a Matt Byars double. MSU put up a five-spot in the fifth and added five more in the next two frames to take an 11-2 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

In the seventh, Capra got things started with a single to left and crossed the dish behind a Daniel Brumbaugh’s triple down the left field line. Adams came up with his second RBI of the day to bring home Brumbaugh and cut Michigan State’s lead to seven, 11-4. The Spartans would add two more in the ninth to make it a 13-4 ball game.

Richmond will wrap-up the Spider Invitational when they meet Campbell tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game will be available on Spider TV.
