Viewers of the upcoming pre-season TV special, Richmond Basketball: The Tradition Spins On, will be taken on a basketball journey from the streets of Philadelphia to the waterways of Venice, and on a walk down Richmond basketball's tradition-rich memory lane that tips off this year's celebration of 100 Years of Spider Basketball.
The fast-paced, half hour show, produced by SpiderTV's Mark Kwolek and Blake Ellett, will air three times on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. The premiere is scheduled for Thursday Nov. 1 at 9:30 pm, with encore showings Sunday Nov. 4 at 9:00 am and Monday Nov. 5 at 9:30 pm.
Junior forward Derrick Williams gives a unique players' perspective as narrator, serving as host for a behind-the-scenes experience with Spider Basketball.
The show spans the globe, traveling with this year's Spider team on its summer journey to Switzerland and Italy. Closer to home, there's a visit to Chris Mooney's native Philadelphia, with never-before-seen footage of the neighborhood and schools that helped steer him on a path to Richmond as the Spiders' successful head coach.
The show also includes a typical day on campus for a Spider student-athlete - reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Kendall Anthony, and a poignant piece on a former Spider student manager who turned to the Mooney family for guidance, comfort and support on, as host Derrick Williams says, "the worst day of her life, and the best."
Finally, the tradition of Richmond basketball meets face-to-face with a one-on-one conversation as Coach Mooney and Hall of Fame Coach Dick Tarrant interview each other about how they both led Spider Basketball to Sweet 16 appearances and national prominence.
Following its airings on Comcast SportsNet, Richmond Basketball: The Tradition Spins On, will also be available on-demand on RichmondSpiders.com.
The Spider men's basketball team tips off its season Friday Nov. 9 with a 7pm game at the Robins Center against Liberty.
