Ben Johnson is entering his third year as Richmond's men's tennis head coach, joining the Spiders in July 2010 after a four-year stint as the men's assistant coach at Davidson.

Richmond's 2011-12 season was one of the best in recent history, as the team recorded its first winning season since 2006 with 10 regular-season wins. Johnson's Spiders then had a breakout appearance at the Atlantic 10 Championship, defeating St. Bonaventure and Duquesne en route to a berth in the conference semifinals.

"The 2011-2012 season was a great step in the right direction," said Johnson. "We had several key wins including Liberty, Davidson and Navy. We not only had our first winning season since 2006, but we finished top-four in conference as well. The future also looks bright. We have all six starters returning from last season, including three all-conference selections in Ethan Dunbar, Sebastien Fauchet and Jesse Feder. Besides our all-conference selections, we have three impact players in Aaron Wicker, Paul Nahon, and Dylan Trent all coming back as well."

Prior to Richmond, Johnson was involved with every aspect of the Wilcats' tennis program at Davidson. He oversaw player development, budget management, student-athlete recruitment and match scheduling. Johnson secured the program's first top-75 ITA ranking in 2008 before helping put together a top-25 recruiting class the following year.

Before arriving at Davidson, Johnson was the Co-Founder and Director of Birmingham's Elite Tennis Academy (BETA) in Birmingham, Ala. In addition, from 2004-2006 he also was the Co-Founder and Director of Junior Development at Revolution Tennis Academy, also located in Birmingham.

While at the academies, Johnson led eight players to a top-100 USTA ranking, with many of the talents earning scholarships in the Southeastern Conference, Big Ten, Big South, Big East, Southern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Johnson was a four-year starter for nationally-ranked Saint Xavier High School. He was a four-year Kentucky High School Athletic Association state champion for the Tigers and was crowned Mr. Kentucky Tennis in 2000. He was also a nationally-ranked junior during his prep career.

Upon graduation, Johnson attended Birmingham-Southern, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Panther tennis program. A three-year team captain, Johnson led the team in singles wins in 2001 and 2002 in addition to pacing the squad in doubles wins the following two seasons. He capped off his career with a designation to the Big South All-Academic team his senior season.

Johnson graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in history and secondary education.
