Travis Stensby was named Richmond's assistant swim coach in July 2011 after serving as an assistant at Gardner-Webb since 2008.

"Travis comes to the University of Richmond at an exciting time," said Spider head swim coach Matt Barany. "I believe athletics at Richmond, in conjunction with a superior classroom experience, can provide rewarding educational lessons for our young adults and Travis will support this academic and athletic mission. I'm excited to witness Travis influence the future of our program by marketing Richmond to recruits and beyond."

Stensby made a quick impact in his first year with the Spiders. At the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship, Richmond swimmers secured seven individual golds and another four in the relays. A pair of Spiders, sophomore Mali Kobelja and freshman Allison Titley, also earned individual honors. Kobelja was selected Most Outstanding Women's Performer and Titley was honored as the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. In addition to Richmond capturing its 10th conference title in 11 years, the team also set two individual school records and two relay records.

The season culminated with junior Lauren Hines receiving Honorable Mention All-America honors with her 16th-place showing in the 100 back at the NCAA Championships. She would then compete in both the 100 and 200 back at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha. Kobelja also joined Hines in Omaha to compete in the 200 IM.

The Spiders have also continued their long-standing tradition of academic excellence during Stensby's tenure. The team's 3.38 cumulative GPA was the highest of any sport, male or female, on campus for the Spring 2012 Semester. Three Spiders in Kobelja, Hines and junior Mina Vucic were also named to the A-10 All-Academic team for the 2011-12 season.

Stensby arrived at Richmond following a successful three-year stint as an assistant with the Gardner-Webb men's and women's swimming programs. While with the Runnin' Bulldogs, Stensby coached six school-record holders and was responsible for helping sign three recruiting classes that included the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Newcomer of the Year and a pair of Junior National finalists. The GWU men captured runner-up honors while the women finished third at the conference championships each of his final two years with the program.

A 2007 graduate of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Stensby earned a degree in mechanical engineering before receiving his M.B.A. from Gardner-Webb in 2010. After transferring from the University of Minnesota prior to his sophomore season, he finished as a 13-time Division II All-American at MS&T. Stensby was the national runner-up in the 100 fly as a senior and graduated with five school records. As a senior, he received the Gale Bullman Award, given each year to one Miner Athletics senior displaying academic excellence, outstanding athletic achievement and a commitment to community service.

Originally from Omaha, Neb., Stensby has also previously worked as a project engineer for Counsilman-Hunsaker in St. Louis and Los Angeles. During his time with the company, he volunteered as a senior swim coach with the STOP Swim Club in Placentia, Calif. Stensby has served as an age group coach at the Bellevue Swim Club in his native Nebraska as well.
