In January 2004, Bruce Matthews joined Richmond’s staff as the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. In that capacity, Matthews oversees all student-athlete support and development programs for Spider athletes and has spearheaded the department’s drive for unprecedented academic success over the past twelve years. Since 2011, Matthews has acted as the sport administrator for baseball.
An All-America baseball player at Salisbury University, Matthews earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees in history. Matthews then attended Auburn University and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in American History, specializing in the Reconstruction Era. After leaving Auburn’s history department for the university’s College of Liberal Arts, Matthews became an academic advisor for undeclared students.
After several years in that position, Matthews joined Auburn’s athletic department as an athletic counselor for its football program. Beyond working with Auburn’s football program, Matthews managed the athletic department’s tutor program and implemented a supplemental instructional model that served the entire campus community.
Matthews resides in Midlothian with his wife, Jennifer and three daughters, Caitlin, Faith and Rachel.
