BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Richmond women’s basketball team (8-9, 2-2 A-10) was unable to hold off the hot shooting Fordham Rams (14-5, 5-0 A-10) on the road on Wednesday afternoon but battled to the end in a 67-41 loss.

The Rams used a 20-3, second quarter run to create the gap in this one. The Spiders actually bested the home team in the third quarter but it proved to be just too little too late as the two sides mostly traded the rest of the way. Janelle Hubbard led all Richmond scorers with 10 points and Lauren Tolson pitched in seven points to go with seven rebounds.

It was a slow start to this one. Neither team was shooting over 30 percent by the first media timeout and the score was knotted, 5-5. After some basket trading, Lauren Tolson dropped in a 15-footer to make it a 9-9 ball game but it was Fordham that knocked in a three in the final minute to take a three-point lead into the first break.

The Spiders struggled shooting in the second quarter. The offense executed well to get open shots the Rose Hill rims were not in a giving mood resulting in just five, second quarter points for Richmond. Meanwhile Fordham found its rhythm in front of the Field Trip Day crowd and built an 18-point advantage, 32-14, by halftime.

Richmond was able to limit the damage in the third quarter but couldn’t cut into the lead all that much. Hubbard finally found her stroke and Dee Hatcher came off the bench to score a season and career high five points in the quarter but the Spiders still trailed by 16 entering the fourth and final quarter.

Hubbard went north of double-figures for the 83rd time in her career with an early 15-footer and Tolson grabbed her seventh rebound to match her average but that would be all as Fordham held serve down the stretch to preserve the victory.

The Spiders will get another shot on the road on Saturday when they visit the Rams of Rhode Island. Tip from the Ryan Center is schedule for 2 p.m.
