Jones Leads Spiders’ Big Second Half In Win At UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – With the end of a thrilling and surprising conference season coming to a close, the Spiders turned to a wily veteran to finish off the final regular season road game of 2017.

ShawnDre' Jones scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead Richmond to a 75-64 victory at UMass to improve to 12-5 in Atlantic 10 play.

Jones went 9-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-9 from long range, tying his career high for three-pointers.

He was one of four players in double figures for Richmond, joined by Khwan Fore (11 points), De'Monte Buckingham (11) and Nick Sherod (10). Buckingham added a career-high eight assists in the contest. T.J. Cline finished with nine points, but set up his teammates with an impressive seven assists.

As a team, the Spiders nearly shot 60 percent yet again, finishing 28-of-49 from the field, good for 57.1 percent. Even more impressively, Richmond assisted on 24 of its 28 made baskets in the contest. The Spiders connected on a season-high 15 three-pointers in the victory.

Richmond started the hot shooting from long range early, getting three-pointer from Fore, Sherod and Buckingham to start the game and grab a 9-6 advantage.

UMass would respond, using the big man Rashaan Holloway to spark a run and eventually grab a 30-19 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

Then the Spiders took over.

A layup from Buckingham, followed by three consecutive three-pointers, two from T.J. Cline and one from Joe Kirby, helped Richmond end the half on a 12-2 run to get within 32-31 at the break.

The Spiders’ run extended into the second half with Jones sparking a 10-0 spurt out of halftime. The senior scored eight of Richmond’s 10 points during the stretch to help grab a 41-32 lead. At one point, Jones hit three treys on three consecutive possessions to put the Spider bench in a frenzy.

UMass would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as the Spiders torched the nets in the second half, shooting 65.4-percent, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc to secure the 75-64 victory.

Richmond returns to action on Saturday, March 4 when they host the Billikens of Saint Louis on Senior Day at the Robins Center. Tip time is set for 4 p.m. on CSN Mid-Atlantic Plus.
