SAN MARCOS, Tex. – After being rained out on Saturday, the University of Richmond baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Texas State on Sunday afternoon.
The Spiders dropped a tough 6-5 decision in 10 innings in game one before the Bobcats’ offense got rolling in game two to lead a 13-2 victory for the home team.
“We weren’t good enough,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but I know the guys feel the same way. We’ll continue to work on getting better every time we step on the field.”
Redshirt junior Robbie Baker was outstanding on the hill in game one and classmate Vinny Capra was just as good at the plate all day long, finishing 5-of-9 for the day.
Game 1: Texas State 6, Richmond 5 (10 innings)
Baker had a stellar outing in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Texas State. The junior registered a career long outing (7.0 IP) and notched a season-best seven strikeouts.
The Spiders got things started in the second inning. Tim Miller and D.J. Lee both singled in the inning before Capra crushed the ball over the left field wall putting Richmond on top, 3-0.
Texas State would answer by getting a pair back in the next two innings, cutting Richmond’s lead to one, 3-2.
Behind an RBI single from Jonathan de Marte, Capra was able to cross the dish and give the Spiders a 4-2 lead. Baker along with a little help from an incredible diving catch by Lee, preserved the Spiders’ lead heading into the eighth. The Bobcats found a late inning spark scoring three runs in the home half of the eighth to take a one-run lead.
TXST’s lead was short-lived as Miller and Lee both capitalized on defensive miscues to tie the game at 5-5 in the ninth, giving way to de Marte to take the mound. The right-hander notched a 1-2-3 inning sending the game into extras.
With a walk-off single from Jared Huber in the bottom of the tenth the Bobcats took the second game of the series, 6-5.
Game 2: Texas State 13, Richmond 2
The Spider bats were hot in the first inning. Behind three-straight singles from Daniel Brumbaugh, de Marte and Kyle Adams, Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Texas State took a two-run lead, 4-2, in the home half of the third off a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly. The Bobcats would push across three in the fourth and four more in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead.
TXST would add two more in the eighth to round out the scoring and secure the 13-2 win.
