Spiders Dominate in 7-0 Sweep of Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Richmond women’s tennis team started its spring trip strong, sweeping Savannah State, 7-0, on Monday afternoon.

"The team came out strong and very consistent especially in the windy conditions,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match.”

The Spiders started strong, sweeping doubles play. The No. 3 pair of Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig logged a default win, before Dessislava Zlateva and Lea Owens clinched the point with a 6-1 win at No. 2. Brittany Boys and Gaby Rosales completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 1.

Richmond continued its dominance in singles play. Owens earned a default win at No. 6, before Ana Ramirez made it 3-0, winning the first set, 6-0, before her opponent retired in the second set.

Giffenig clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5, before Kelsey Williams and Marshall each took down their opponents, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 and 2 positions, respectively. Zlateva finished out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1

The Spiders will stay on the road, this time heading to South Carolina where they will face Coastal Carolina.

“We are ready to bring the heat against Coastal Carolina tomorrow," Wesselink added.

Match time on Tuesday morning is set for 10 a.m. in Conway.
