CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Richmond women’s tennis team played its second match in the last 24 hours, but could not complete the road-trip sweep, falling at Coastal Carolina, 5-2.

“Coastal handled the wind well today,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “We need to be tougher when conditions aren't to our liking. These are just the kind of matches we need to make us stronger.”

The Spiders started strong, taking a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The No. 3 pair of Dessislava Zlateva and Lea Owens took a decisive 6-3 win, before Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig clinched the point with a 7-5 win in the No. 2 spot.

“Our doubles play was a bright spot. as the four freshmen pulled out important wins,” Wesselink added. “Their improvement this season is impressive.”

The momentum carried over into singles play for the Spiders, with Brittany Boys taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over Coastal’s Maria Khomchenko in the No. 6 position.

The Chanticleers then mounted a comeback, sweeping the rest of singles play to take the match, 5-2.
