UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Spider Baseball team dropped an 8-5 heartbreaker on Sunday to Youngstown State.

Heading into the ninth, Richmond held a 5-3 lead, but the Penguins found a late game spark to push across six and secure the 8-5 victory.

After Layne Looney registered three strikeouts in the first, the Spider offense jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Vinny Capra got things started with a leadoff single and scored the first run of the day off a double from D.J. Lee. A pair of singles from Kyle Adams and Jonathan de Marte and some Penguin miscues allowed Daniel Brumbaugh to cross the dish giving UR the early lead.

Richmond tacked on a run in the third as Caleb Ward's base knock drove in Brumbaugh, who doubled to start the inning.

The Penguins got on the board in the fifth. Richmond answered with a run of its own in the home half of the inning with Adams' RBI single up the middle to score Brumbaugh. Justin Cook blasted a leadoff double in the sixth and scored thanks to RJ Watters' sac fly to give the Spiders a 5-1 advantage.

Youngstown State threatened in the eighth and was able to get one more on the board. The Penguins kept the momentum going in the ninth as they pushed across six runs to secure their 8-5 win.

Looney threw five innings scattering just two hits and allowing only one run. The right hander struck out five, one shy of his career-best.

The Spiders will return to action on Tuesday, March 14 as they host Bryant. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will be available on SpiderTV.
