BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The University of Richmond women’s lacrosse team would not let two recent losses dictate its play on Sunday afternoon.

The Spiders came out strong in the first half and continued their scoring spree in the second, taking down Campbell, 16-7, on the road.

“We came out strong from the start,” head coach Allison Kwolek said after the game. “I thought our offense did a good job controlling tempo and getting everyone involved. Defensively, we had some really nice sets and were able to limit Campbell's options on offense.”

Senior Natalia Chaney and junior Kim Egizi each scored four goals for the Spiders, while freshman Sam Geiersbach logged her fifth hat trick of the season with three goals. Sophomore Marissa Brown was also active on the offensive end, assisting on six Spider goals to tie her career high that she set earlier in the season.

Chaney started the scoring quickly, netting two goals in the opening two minutes of play, the first assisted by Egizi. Geiersbach then scored her 20th goal of the season, before Egizi and senior Melissa Teel each scored, assisted by Brown, to make it 5-0 just under 16 minutes into the game.

Chaney then netted the hat trick with a free position score to make it 6-0, before Campbell was able to score its lone goal of the first half. The Spiders would take a 7-1 lead into the break after sophomore Mia Castagnero scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Chaney.

Campbell came out stron in the second half, scoring twice in the opening three minutes to cut the Spider lead to four. The Camels could not hold off the Richmond offensive pressure for long, as Castagnero scored again to make it 8-3 with 25:48 to play.

The Spiders then scored three straight goals, two ffrom Geiersbach and another from Egizi, to take an 11-3 lead with 18 minutes to play. Sophomore Aly Fries and Brown were credited with the assists, respectively.

The Camels scored again to make it 11-4, but Chaney scored her fourth goal of the game to put the Spiders back up by eight with 16:44 to play.

Less than a minute later, it looked as if Campbell would make a run, scoring twice to cut the Spider lead to six, but Egizi logged a hat trick at the 11:38 mark to make the score 13-6.

The Camels would score once more in the game, but the Spiders rebounded once again with two goals from Fries and another from Egizi to take a 16-7 win. Brown assist on two of the final three scores for Richmond.

Richmond outshot the Camels, 25-19, and converted all three of its free-position shot attempts. Junior Caroline Queally led the Spiders with six draw controls on the day, and freshman Megan Gianforte had another impressive day in goal, stopping six of Campbell’s shots and collecting two ground balls in the win.

The Spiders return to action next Saturday, March 25, when they travel to face in-state foe William & Mary. First draw in Williamsburg is set for 1 p.m.
