UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Playing on the road is always a tough task, no matter what the sport.

Head Coach Dan Chemotti and the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team seem to have found a winning formula for the road after the Spiders powered past Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon, 13-6, to stay unbeaten in the Southern Conference and earn their 10th win in their past 11 road games.

“Today was your typical conference matchup. Two teams who know each other well and played hard for four quarters. Bellarmine has some very talented players and we have lots of respect for their program as a whole,” Chemotti said.

Offensively, senior Dan Ginestro had his biggest point out of the season with three goals and two assists, while classmate J.P. Forester added a hat trick for himself with three goals on the day. Sophomore Teddy Hatfield had two goals and two assists, while freshman Tyler Shoults continued to make an impact with three assists for the Spiders.

Defensively, sophomore Austin Cates was outstanding all day long with a career-high four caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior Brendan Hynes had three caused turnovers on the day. Six different Spiders had caused turnovers in the contest.

Senior Benny Pugh continued his outstanding season in goal, allowing just five goals in nearly 57 minutes of action, while tallying 12 saves on the day.

“The first half was a defensive battle, luckily we were able to break through offensively in the third quarter and gain some breathing room,” Chemotti added. “We played a lot of guys today and hopefully that had something to do with us pulling away in the second half.”

Richmond’s stifling defense would flex its muscle early and often, holding the Knights without a score in the first quarter thanks to six saves from Pugh.

The Spiders’ offense went to work with goals from Forester and Hatfield to grab a 2-0 lead.

BU would score two of the next three goals in the contest, but a transition goal off by Ginestro off a faceoff would send Richmond to the break with a 4-2 advantage.

The Spiders blew the game open in the third quarter starting with a goal from Layne Collins less than 90 seconds into the second half. Collins’ goal started a string of five straight unanswered by Richmond to start the second half to take a commanding 9-2 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter.

Bellarmine would respond with three goals in a five minutes span to make it 10-5, but three insurance goals by Ginestro, Matt Davies and Jack Worstell in the final four minutes of the contest would seal the victory.

Richmond hits the road one more time in 2017 when they travel to reigning SoCon champion Air Force next Saturday. Game time in Colorado Springs is set for 2 p.m. EST.
