FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women’s lacrosse team rallied to come within two in the second half, but George Mason was able to pull away in the closing minutes, defeating the Spiders, 16-11, on Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots started strong and jumped out to a 6-0 advantage to open the game, but Katie Trainer, Geiersbach and Berkery would each score to cut the lead in half. Mason would then outscore the Spiders, 4-1, to take a 10-4 lead into the half.
Katie Sciandra scored in the opening minute of the second half to make it 10-5, but the Mason offense stayed strong, scoring twice more.
It was at the 19:39 mark in the second half that the Spiders started their rally, scoring five straight goals to pull within two and cut the Patriot lead to 12-10. Teel started the rally with a goal off of an Egizi assist, before Egizi scored on a free position shot. Berkery and Geiersbach each scored again, before Teel tallied her second of the game with 11:35 remaining.
The Patriots answered back with four-straight goals of their own to seal the win, despite Marissa Brown’s goal with 32 seconds remaining.
Megan Gianforte finished with eight saves in the cage for the Spiders. Richmond also held a 36-30 advantage in shots, and win 16 draw controls to George Mason’s 13.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, April 21, when they host St. Bonaventure at Robins Stadium. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
