CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Spider Baseball team is not for the faint of heart. Once again, the Spiders were locked in a hard fought battle on Tuesday night against perennial power North Carolina.
Richmond posted a dramatic rally in the fifth to overcome the three-run deficit and tie the game at 3-3. They'd take a one-run lead in the seventh and take #3 UNC all the way to the bottom of the ninth, before dropping a heartbreaker, 5-4.
The Tarheels took a 3-0 lead after four innings, but Kyle Schmidt got things going for the Spiders in the fifth. With two-outs, Kyle Adams singled through the left side allowing Schmidt to score the first Richmond run. That wouldn't be the end as back-to-back singles from Daniel Brumbaugh and Jonathan de Marte allowed the Spiders to even the score at 3-3.
Another two-out rally in the seventh, gave the Spiders a 4-3 lead as Vinny Capra crossed the plate thanks to a Brumbaugh single and a Tarheel error.
North Carolina would tie the game back up in the eighth behind an RBI single.
The Spiders wouldn't go quietly and continued to battle the Tarheels to the wire, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth. However, UNC loaded the bases and pushed across the winning run to win the ball game 5-4.
The Spiders will return to action on Friday afternoon at St.Bonaventure. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM.
