UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- They say rivalries bring out the best in everyone. The University of Richmond basebal team will close out the 2017 season hosting crosstown rival, VCU for a three-game set.

SCOUTING THE RAMS
The Rams have won two of their last five games in the final stretch of the 2017 regular season. This will be the first Atlantic 10 series for the Rams since the first weekend of May, where they dropped two of three against Dayton. Paul Witt is leading VCU at the plate, hitting .368 and is tied with Logan Farrar for the team-lead with 70 hits. As a team, VCU ranks in the top-three in hitting (.287) and pitching (3.70 ERA) in the A-10.
A Season Ago: The Spiders took two of three from VCU, both in extra innings, last sesaon at The Diamond.
BRUMBAUGH NAMED TO OLERUD TWO-WAY PLAYER WATCH LIST
Junior Daniel Brumbaugh has established himself as one of the nation's best this season. The starting second baseman for the Spiders, leads the team and the A-10 in triples (4), and home runs (4), while knocking in 34 RBIs, which ranks him second on the team. On the mound, Brumbaugh has appeared in 13 games, three of which were weekend starts. He's tossed 29.2 innings, striking out 29 and only walking four.
GO4THEGOAL: LACE UP 4 PEDIATRIC CANCER
More Than A Game
This season, the Spiders have actively been involved with the Go4theGoal organization. On Saturday, April 8, Richmond joined the fight against childhood cancer and laced up their cleats with gold shoelaces as part of the Go4theGoal's "Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer" initiative. Six players visited the VCU Massey Cancer Center at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU this spring. While volunteering their time, the Spiders brought countless smiles to kids' faces talking to them about their baseball and their interests.
- The Spiders are tied for 36th in the country in doubles per game (2.00) and tied for 51st overall (100)
- Capra is currently ranked 49th in the country in hits per game (1.49)
- Kyle Adams is the 17th toughest player in the country to strikeout while Daniel Brumbaugh is the 26th toughest
JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior Brandon Johnson found his name among some of the country's best talent behind the plate. Johnson was one of 85 catchers to be nominated by their coaches for the Watch List. he is one of the few collegiate catchers to call his own game.
RECORDS TO WATCH
Junior Daniel Brumbaugh is nearing the top 10 in program history for saves. The right-hander currently has seven saves and is one more will tie him for tenth all-time. Head Coach Tracy Woodson is also approaching a milestone as hitting 100 wins as the Spiders' head coach is on the horizon - he is three wins away.
D.J. LEE NAMED ARTHUR ASHE, JR. 2017 SPORTS SCHOLAR | Full Release
Lee not only excels on the diamond, but also in the classroom and in the community. On April 11, Lee was recognized on a national scale as he was named a 2017 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar. Lee, who posts a 3.59 cumulative GPA in Business Administration, was honored with the award at a luncheon at the Jepson Alumni Center. Former Spider football star and NASA astronaut, Leland Melvin, was the keynote speaker for the event.

RETURNING TO THE LINEUP
Spider Voices: What Tommy Has Taught Me (by Brendan McGuigan)
The Spiders lost two pitchers at the start of the 2016 season in Robbie Baker and Brendan McGuigan. Baker went down a few weeks before the season started with an ACL injury, while McGuigan had Tommy John's surgery last spring after coming out of his first start of the year against UNCW. Baker made his debut on the mound on opening day at Coastal Carolina while McGuigan saw his first time on the bump at Texas State.

Spider Voices: One Last Time
Richmond has two guys on the roster that were both granted a sixth-year of eligibility - Jonathan de Marte and Zach Grossfeld. Both started their careers in 2012 and were plagued by injury, both also will have a bachelor's and a Master's degree upon leaving the University this spring. Grossfeld and de Marte both played completely healthy last season, for the first time since joining the Spiders.
EYES ON BARTLETT
Keenan Bartlett's resume continued to grow in the offseason. He was named one of Perfect Game's top 100 juniors in the country, he was #90 in D1Baseball's Top 100 College Prospects. Perfect Game also named the right-hander the number one prospect out of the Northwoods Summer League. After joining the Spiders as a two-way player, and getting plenty of at-bats in his first season, Bartlett spent much of last season on the mound. Over the summer with the Lakeshore Chinooks, he was dominant on the hill finishing the season with a 2.23 ERA and 56 strikeouts. He was also named to the Northwoods League All-Star Game.
THE 2017 SLATE
In total, Richmond will face six NCAA Tournament teams in 2017. The Spiders, who faced off with reigning national champions, Coastal Carolina on opening day, also take on perennial powers Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, St. John's Maryland and Michigan State, who will be playing at Pitt Field as part of the Spider Invitational.
In the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, the league coaches picked Richmond to finish fifth. Rhode Island was picked as the league favorite with VCU picked second. Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis were tied for third.
WELCOME HOME NEW SPIDERS
Coach Woodson and his staff welcomed 11 newcomers this fall - eight freshmen and three transfers. Woodson said, "This is a great recruiting class that filled the needs on both the offensvie and defensive side - the biggest need was pitching and we feel that we have filled that need."
The series will continue tomorrow at Pitt Field with the first pitch scheduled for 3PM. The game will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network. The Spiders' will honor the three seniors on Saturday prior to the game.
