University of Richmond, Va. -- Despite the beautiful weather in Richmond, the Spiders fell to Old Dominion, 4-3, on Wednesday.

Richmond worked quickly to earn the doubles point. Helen Cunningham and Alexandra Smyth advanced their doubles record to 7-3 with an 8-4 win over ODU's Diana Ivanova and Aleksandra Mitrovska. Melissa Kandinata and Elizabeth Sims downed their opponents 8-5 while Joanna Matuszczyk and Nil Horoz defeated Nika Khmolovska and Faith Atiso, 8-3.

"Fortunately our doubles play has steadily improved," said Head Coach Mark Wesselink. "I like the combinations we have right now."

In singles play, sophomore Elizabeth Sims tallied another victory by downing Juliana Pires 6-7, 6-1, and 6-3. Sims is now 11-0 in singles play. Freshman Nil Horoz picked up what would be the Spider's last point of the match by defeated Faith Atiso 6-2, 6-0.

"ODU played tougher and outworked us today," commented Wesselink. "I hope this is a wakeup call for some of our players. If we want to defend our A-10 title, we will have to put in some hard work. I think the team will respond to the challenge of this loss."

The Spiders return to action on April 3, against East Carolina.
