UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Women's basketball head coach Michael Shafer announced the signing of Lauren Tolson (Frederick, Md.) to a National Letter of Intent Friday morning.
"Lauren is a great addition to our program, said Shafer. "She brings the ability to score, create and defend to our team. She can play both the point and wing positions- which will give her the opportunity to contribute as a freshman. She impressed our staff with her ability to shoot the three, penetrate and create for herself and others. Lauren is a competitor- she comes from a winning program and won a state title. She understands what it takes to win, which is important to our team and program. Lauren is a very good student, but most importantly she is a great person and will fit well with our team."
Tolson, a 5'8 guard from Frederick, Md., hails from Frederick High School where she averaged 27.0 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, 4.0 steals per game her senior year. Tolson is a two-time Frederick County Player of the Year. Tolson is the all-time scorer in school history with over 1,300 points scored in her four-year career and holds the season-record for three pointers (67).
Tolson recorded a school-record 43 points in a game and made a school-best seven three-point shots in a game earlier this season. Tolson was a member of the AAA West Regional Champion team where her team finished as state semifinalists. Tolson is also a two-time All Area first team honoree, as well as a two-time MVAL League first team selection.
In 2011, Tolson led her high school team to the AAA Maryland State Basketball Championship. Tolson scored 24 points in the championship game.
Tolson was a three-sport athlete at Frederick High School, also lettering in outdoor track and field and cross country. She is the daughter of Maurice and Cheri-Tolson Clipper.
Tolson will join the Spiders in the fall of 2012.
