ANAHEIM, Calif. - Former University of Richmond baseball standout Joe Mahoney was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday by the Baltimore Orioles. Mahoney will join the team as they begin a three-game series against the Angels in Anaheim. Mahoney would become the seventh Oriole to make their major league debut this season.
"We are all very excited that Joe got called up to join the Orioles today," Spider head coach Mark McQueen said. "He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity and we wish him the best of luck."
Mahoney earns the promotion to the MLB club for the first time after posting some impressive numbers in the minors. The 2010 Oriole Minor League Player of the Year, Mahoney was hitting .256 this season with Norfolk, totaling 14 doubles, five home runs with 38 RBI before getting the call-up. Mahoney has been particularly hot of late, posting a .306 batting average in his last 10 games, including four multi-hit efforts in that stretch.
Mahoney played three seasons at Richmond, twice earning Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Mahoney's best season came in 2007, when he hit 17 homers and collected 62 RBI. After the 2007 campaign, the Orioles selected Mahoney in the sixth round of the MLB Draft. For his career, Mahoney ranks tied for ninth all-time in school history with 152 RBI and ties for 10th in home runs with 31.
