UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders football team had an early morning practice at Robins Stadium as part of its first two-a-day on Tuesday. After a near two-hour session this morning, the Spiders will return to practice at 4 p.m. at the Grass Fields on River Road.
During 11-on-11 drills, freshman WR Reggie Diggs continues to impress. Working on the left sideline, the Dendron, Va. product took a screen pass, made a nice move and ran down the sideline for a big gainer.
Later, the offensive unit continued to execute well. Rolling out to his right, QB John Laub hit RB/WR Dominique Miller, who made a nice adjustment to come back to the ball. Miller then showed his great athleticism, beating his defender for a long touchdown. On the next play, Laub found a streaking Kevin Finney down the seam for a 15-yard gainer.
Not to be outdone, the defensive unit made its fair share of plays during practice. During the 11-on-11 drills, junior Wayne Pettus made a great break on the ball and came away with an interception. Also during the snaps, Jacob Pierce, Evan Kelly and Omar Howard all got pressure on the Richmond quarterbacks.
With practice wrapping up, the team worked on its two-minute drill. The defense looked strong, with Justin Grant and Mylon Blueford each coming up with interceptions.
The Richmond Spider football team will be back at practice on Tuesday afternoon at 4 PM on the Grass Fields on River Road.
This season, all practices during training camp are open to the public. With practices being held at both Robins Stadium and the Grass Practice Fields on River Road, fans attending practice are asked to remain in the bleachers. In Robins Stadium, fans are asked to sit in the stands on the west side of the stadium.
Post Practice Quotes
"Right now we are on
pace, right where we need to be. There
are some guys that are stepping up and some young guys that are really pushing
some of the older guys. I think we have
an opportunity to create a lot of competition at a lot of different areas and
that's helping us compete hard and get better."
-- Offensive Coordinator Brandon Streeter
"Practice went well.
Everyone's trying to figure out how to adjust to the first
two-a-day. All of the guys are prepared,
everyone's in good shape. We just have
to make a few more plays on offense and defense. I think Coach Rocco knows that we are working
hard and we are trying to get everything right for him."
