WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Richmond men's soccer team was topped, 3-0, by William & Mary on Saturday at the Tribe's Martin Family Stadium in Williamsburg.
Ben Anderson scored an early goal to put the Tribe (1-1-1) on top, 1-0, in the sixth minute, and they would not look back from there as Roshan Patel and Chris Albiston each netted second-half scores to give the Tribe the win.
Senior midfielder Houston Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) led the Spiders (1-2-0) with six shots on the night, while freshman Manaan Umar (Herndan, Va./Chantilly) finished with a pair of strikes in the setback.
Sophomore Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown, 1-2-0) secured five saves over a full night in net for the Spiders, while his counterpart in Bennett Jones followed suit with five stops.
After holding a 7-5 advantage in shots at the close of the opening half, Richmond allowed 15 in a second frame that saw the Tribe flex its offensive muscle. W&M also held a 9-7 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Richmond continues its season-opening six-match road swing next weekend when it travels southward to the Davidson Tournament, in which the Spiders will take on the host Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 8 before meeting Appalachian State two days later.
