DAVIDSON, N.C. - Sophomore defender Shane Powell netted his first score as a Spider on Saturday as Richmond men's soccer was edged, 2-1, by Davidson at the Wildcats' adidas Classic.

Davidson (1-2-1) struck first in the 34th minute when Brian McGue delivered a shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net for his first score of the season.

The score would remain the same until late in the match when Luke Blades fed Alec Rotunda to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage in the 79th minute.

Richmond (1-3-0) countered three minutes when Powell (Wilmington, Del./Providence College) took a shot top shelf past Wildcat goalkeeper Matt Pacifici to trim the lead to 2-1.

Freshman midfielder/forward Chris Hill (Howell, N.J./Howell) looked to even the score with less than two minutes to play, but Pacifici made the save to stymie Spiders' final threat.

Powell and junior midfielder/forward Michael Forsyth (Cary, N.C./Apex) led the Spiders with a pair of shots apiece, with both of Powell's shots struck on goal.

Sophomore Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) went the distance for the Spiders in goal, finishing with five saves in the losing effort. Pacifici also secured five stops to record the win.

While Davidson held an overwhelming advantage in shots, only six of the team's 23 shots were on goal, whereas six of Richmond's seven attempts were on target on Saturday. Davidson came away with a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks as well.

The Spiders began to hit their offensive stride in the second half, outshooting the Wildcats by a 5-4 count while also leading 3-2 in corner kicks.

Richmond wraps up tournament play on Monday at 5 p.m. when it meets Appalachian State at the Wildcats' Alumni Stadium.
