Spiders Turn In Top-Three Finishes At W&M Invite

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - On a sunny Saturday morning on the grass-filled hills of Williamsburg's Eastern State Hospital grounds, the Richmond men's and women's cross country squads continued their 2012 campaigns with top-three finishes at the William & Mary Invitational.

W&M captured the men's team title in Saturday's 8k race with 32 points. George Mason and Richmond rounded out the top three with 48 and 52 points, respectively, followed by VCU (111), UNC Wilmington (132), Christopher Newport (154) and Hampton (215).

The Tribe also took the women's team title in the 5k race with 22 points, while Richmond finished with 41 points to secure the second spot. UNCW claimed third with 98 points, followed by Mason (105), CNU (129), Hampton (182) and VCU (201).

Junior Ryan Lee (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) canvassed the course in 25:42 to take sixth and pace the Spiders for the second-straight outing. Senior Chris York (White Post, Va./Clarke County) clocked a 25:44 to trail closely behind in ninth, with sophomore Andrew Valenski (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) rounding out the top 10 with a time of 25:52.

Senior Stephanie Paradis (Leesburg, Va./Stone Bridge) led a field of four consecutive Spiders to cross the line with her sixth-place finish of 18:37. Newcomers Kelly Bailey (Dallas, Texas/Peddie School) and Tara Hanley (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) each crossed in 18:40 to take 7th and 8th, respectively, while junior Roxanne Henningson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Greenwich) finished right behind in 18:41 to nab the ninth spot.

The Spiders will have an opportunity to preview November's Southeast Regional Championship course when they travel to Charlotte in two weeks for the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 28.
