GREENVILLE, N.C.- The men's tennis team opened their fall season at the three-day East Carolina University Fall Shoot Out this weekend in Greenville, N.C.
"Strictly looking at the results, it was a rough start to the fall season. However, we improved with each day. Several guys competed well and made good adjustments with each match, said Head Coach Ben Johnson. "Overall, the tournament showed what we need to work on and we look to our next fall event."
Senior Sebastian Fauchet (Rochester, N.Y./ Harley School) and redshirt sophomore Ethan Dunbar (Medina, Ohio/ Cloverleaf) finished their weekend 1-2 in singles play. Senior Jesse Feder (Plantation, Fla./ Saint Thomas Aquinas) dropped a pair of decisions 6-4, 6-2 to James Madison's Rob Stirling but went on to defeat East Carolina's Damien Bernard after winning the tiebreaker 10-6 to end his weekend 1-1.
Seniors, Justin Baker (Bolton, Conn/ Bolton) and Aaron Wicker (Louisville, Ky. Dupont Manual), sophomore Paul Nahon III (Springfield, Mo./Glendale), and freshman Will Welte (Kansas City, Mo./ Pembroke Hill) ended their weekend 0-3 in singles play
In doubles play, Sebastian Fauchet and Aaron Wicker went 1-2, defeating East Carolina's Patriek Wolterbeek and John Schmitt 8-6 on the second day of competition.
Will Welte and Paul Nahon earned their only doubles win 8-4 on the last day of competition defeating James Madison's Patriek Wolterbeek and John Schmitt. Justin Baker and Ethan Dunbar followed suite, defeating East Carolina's Nico Soriano and Damien Bernard 8-5.
"Going into the weekend, we hoped to get in a lot of matches and make some improvements, and that's exactly what we did," said Senior Captain Justin Baker. "Although we would have preferred a few more wins, we're more aware of what we need to work on and it was the start of what we hope will be a very successful fall season."
The Spiders will continue their fall play the September 21-23 at the Elon Fall Tournament.
