UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's soccer team got a pair of first-half goals from senior captain Houston Oldham in a 2-1 home-opening win over Longwood on Tuesday evening at Robins Stadium.

"It was a disjointed performance, which is to be expected with five or six of our players injured," said Head Coach Leah Cowlishaw. "We therefore had a lot of players asked to play out a position. It was a wonderful effort and victory tonight."

Richmond (2-5-0) jumped out to an early lead over Longwood (2-6-0) less than seven minutes into the match on a connection between freshman Parker Patterson (Alexandria, Va./ St. Stephens & St. Agnes) and senior Houston Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./ Montgomery Bell Academy).  Patterson passed the ball to the right side of the goal, where Oldham launched the ball high into the upper left net.

Oldham struck again in the first earning the Spiders two goals on the night on a cross pass from freshman Mitch Reavis (Clarendon Hills, Ill/ Hinsdale Central).  Longwood's Evan Jones responded 38 seconds later with their only goal on the night.

The teams battled for momentum throughout the second half with Longwood holding the advantage with 8 shots in the period.  Despite outshooting the Spiders the Lancers could not capitalize.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Grover (Memphis Tenn./St. George)  combated the Lancers offense during a full game in the net with six saves on the night.  Longwood's Carl Carpenter allowed two goals and had three saves on the night.  Carpenter injured early in the second half was replaced by Seth Edman. Edman earned two saves during his 41 minutes in the goal.

The Lancers outshot the Spiders 18-11. Longwood also took three corner kicks to Richmond's one.

The Spiders play their second of two home games this week against the VMI Keydets on Friday Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
