UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Houston Oldham racked up his third score of the week in the match's opening minutes and junior Chris Hoerner added an insurance goal down the stretch to give Richmond men's soccer a 2-0 victory over visiting VMI on Friday night at Robins Stadium.
"This group has shown all along this season that they're always ready to play," said interim head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "They have a lot of hunger and desire. It was a well-deserved performance tonight and gives us momentum heading into the Liberty game. I expect another great performance in a few days time."
Senior midfielder Houston Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./ Montgomery Bell Academy) struck ten minutes into the first half netting the Spider's first goal. The goal is Oldam's third goal of the season. Throughout the rest of the first and early in the second the game remained a draw. In the 75th minute of play junior midfielder Chris Hoerner (Middleburg, Va./Highland School) launched a goal from 25 yards out, securing the win for the Spiders and his first goal of the season.
Oldham led the team with five shots during the game for the Spiders. The Keydets outshot the Spiders 26-12.
Senior Chris Grover (Memphis, Tenn./ St. George's) played a full night in goal, earning five saves for the Spiders. The Keydets Taylor Fuerestein allowed two goals and one save.
The Keydets had four corner kicks on the night, while the Spiders took one.
The Spiders are back on the road for a midweek meeting with Liberty on Tuesday Sept. 25 at 7pm.
