UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 5, 2012) - The Richmond men's soccer team lost 2-1 in a game that went down to the wire against the George Washington Colonials on Friday at Robins Stadium.

"This was a game we should have won, we had plenty of chances," said Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw.

The Spiders (4-6-0, 0-1-0 A-10) grabbed the lead early in the game when senior midfielder Houston Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./ Montgomery Bell Academy) netted the penalty kick off a Colonial handball in the twelfth minute of play.  George Washington (4-6-0, 1-0-0 A-10)  tied the game eight minutes later when freshman midfielder Ross Higgins netted a goal in the right side of the box off a pass from teammate Zach Abaie.  In the 67th minute of play the Colonials charged ahead 2-1 with a goal from John Forrest. With less than thirty seconds left the Colonials fouled giving the Spiders a penalty kick with eight seconds yet. Junior midfielder Michael Forsyth (Cary, N.C./ Apex) took a hard shot at the net but senior goalkeeper Alejandro Almodovar saved the goal for a Colonial victory.

The Spider's outshot the Colonials 20 to 11 and took six more corner kicks to George Washington's two. Houston Oldham led the Spiders with five shots and one goal.  Timmy Albright (Richmond, Va./ Collegiate School) took four shots for the Spiders.  Offensively junior forward Tyler Ranalli led the Colonial offense with 4 shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./ Moorestown) played a full game in the box, earning three saves while Colonial counterpart Alejandro Almodovar had nine saves on the night.

Richmond will be back in action on Sunday at 2:30 as they take on No. 13 Charlotte at Robins Stadium
