UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Christina Amorose scored the game-winning goal against UMass for the second-straight year as No. 22 ranked Richmond defeated the Minutewomen 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 opener Saturday afternoon.
Amorose, who scored the only goal in Richmond's 1-0 win over UMass in Amherst last fall, took a pass from freshman Avery Safford on the left side of the net and lifted a shot inside the opposite post in the 47th minute.
The goal was Amorose's fourth goal of the season and the 14th of her career. It was the fourth game-winning goal of her career.
The Spiders out-shot a UMass team that was recently ranked in the Top-25 by a 15-9 margin, forcing Minutewomen goalkeeper Sam Carolino to make eight saves.
UMass (5-8, 0-1 Atlantic 10) had some chances, but the Spider defense held strong and Richmond goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski made three saves.
Richmond (7-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) returns to action tomorrow in a non-conference game against Villanova at 1 p.m. at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders return to conference play on Friday at city-rival and new Atlantic 10 rival VCU at 5 p.m.
