UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- The Richmond Spider men's soccer team was blanked by the no. 13 ranked Charlotte 49ers 2-0 on Sunday at Robins Stadium.
"Considering Charlotte was a team that went to the national championship last year, I was pleased with the momentum of our team," said head coach Leigh Cowlishaw.
The first half of play was a defense battle until the 44th minute of play when Charlotte's Donnie Smith hit the lower right of the goal on a pass from teammate Anthony Perez. The score remained 1-0 until the 85th minute of play when Giuseppe Gentile netted a security goal for the 49ers.
Freshman Mannaan Umar (Herndon, Va/ Chantilly), junior Michael Forsyth (Cary, N.C./Apex), and freshman Christopher Hill (Howell, N.J./Howell) led the Spider offense with one shot each. Donnie Smith led the 49er offense with four shots and one goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Hand held the 49ers offense to two goals. Hand earned 10 saves during a full afternoon in the net. Charlotte's Klay Davis had two saves during the game.
The 49ers outshot the Spiders 19 to 3 and took eight corner kicks to the Spider's zero.
Richmond begins a four game road stretch on Friday, Oct. 12 against Butler.
