RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 2, 2012)- The Spider men's soccer team tied No. 19 VCU, 3-3, in double overtime on senior night at Robins Stadium.
"This was the best played game the team has played all season," said head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "I have a lot of admiration for the players, they played a hard fought game against a top-ranked program."
Richmond took a 1-0 lead in second minute of play when Mannaan Umar connected with Oliver Murphy for a close range goal. VCU responded with a goal in the 11th minute of play. The Spiders quickly regrouped and Oliver Murphy netted a goal in the 15th minute of play, followed a close range goal from Nick Butler in the 32nd minute of play.
The Rams narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the 41st minute of play. VCU scored the game-tying goal in the 54th minute of play. Goalkeeper Chris Grover stopped the Rams offense in the second half and overtime with 10 saves.
Timmy Albright led the Spider attack with three shots and two assists on the night. Manaan Umar, Oliver Murphy, and Nick Butler each netted a goal for the spiders. Butler took three shots over the course of the match. VCU's Jason Johnson led the Ram attack with 13 shots.
The Rams outshot the Spiders 37-14. Goalie Chris Grover stopped the Ram offense during a full night in the box with a season high 11 saves. VCU goalie Andrew Wells had two saves on the night.
