FAIRFAX, Va. - The Richmond swim and dive team closed the first day of competition at the Patriot Invitational with a first place finish from Mali Kobelja.
Mali Kobelja took first place in the 200 IM with a time 0f 2:04.27. Kobelja's time is the fifth fastest recorded time in Spider history.
"Mali was really relaxed this morning, she made 2:03 look easy," said head coach Matt Barany. "I think she was a bit too excited tonight, but she was able to close her last 50 yards and win."
Junior teammate Erin Brady finished in eighth place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.19.
The 400 yard medley relay comprised of senior Lauren Hines, junior Mali Kobelja, freshman Kelley Yang, and freshman Natalya Ares finished in second place behind Ohio University with a time of 3:51.64.
Captain Jessie Krebs earned fourth place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.73.
"Our goal has been to extract lessons from every swim," said Barany. "I though the freshmen did a great job of adopting mentally."
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, and 800 freestyle relay. Preliminary heats will begin at 10 a.m. and finals will start a 6 p.m.
