Spiders Finish Second at Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va.- The Richmond swim and dive team finished second behind Ohio University at the Patriot Invitational the weekend. The squad won seven events over the course of the invitational and broke one meet record.

In the last day of competition Lauren Hines took first place in back to back events.  Hines narrowly topped Ohio's Anastasia Bocharnikova in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.41).  Fourteen minutes later Hines won the 100-yard freestyle (51.18).  She finished the weekend with three individual first place finishes and a new meet record with a NCAA B qualifying time in the 100 back.

The Spiders sent five swimmers to the final heat of the 200-yard butterfly.  Melissa Ross took first place (2:05.22). Ross was the only freshman to take first place this weekend.  Her time is the eighth fastest in Spider history.   Kelley Yang finished in third place (2:06.49).  Allison Titley in fifth (2:07.08).  Jessie Krebs battled for the seventh place finish (2:09.10), and Meredith Gouger rounded out the event in eighth place (2:09.74)

Mali Kobelja finished the meet earning second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18. 97). Kobelja had an outstanding weekend, winning both the 400 IM (4:25.15) and the 200 IM (2:04.27).  

Erin Brady took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.98) behind teammate Kobelja.  

Meredith Gouger earned 9th place in the 1650- yard freestyle (17:33.29).

The Spider dive team will be in action on December 1 and 2 in Wilmington, N.C.  The swim and dive team will be back in action on January 5 for their first A-10 dual meet of the season against Rhode Island.
