NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Richmond women's indoor team started the winter campaign with a strong a showing at the CNU Holiday Open on Saturday in Newport News. Freshman Mary Allen and junior Alyson McGonigle earned second place finishes for the Spiders.
" As a staff we are pleased with the effort of these women," said head coach Lori Taylor. "It was an opportunity for us to see several of our athletes, including our freshman compete for the first time. We've been looking forward to seeing how these women respond to competition and how they have progressed through the fall training cycle.
Newcomer Mary Allen took second overall in her college debut in the 200-meter (25.46). Allen won her heat by half a second but was edged for first place by N.C. Central's Ashley McCoy, who competed in the last heat.
Junior teammate Alyson McGonigle finished second in the 800 meter clocking in with a time of 2:17.86. Her time was an improvement from her performance at the Holiday Open last year.
Janel Francis started her Spider career by turning in a leap of 5.33 meters, earning her a spot in the finals and an overall seventh place finish. Later in the day, she went 26.40 in the 200m placing 19th overall. In the 60m she clocked a time of 7.89 while sophomore Amber Young finished the 60m in 8.24. The two raced in the same heat of the 60m.
In a tight 600-meter race sophomore Alexis Williams finished seventh (1:40.46) overall. The time was a two second improvement from her opening last season at the CNU Holiday Open as well as her fastest indoor finish.
"The upper classmen's performances were faster than a year ago," said Taylor.
Deborah Fajuyigbe convincingly won her heat after gaining momentum in the second lap and took 14th of 40 in the 400m (1:00.55).
Fajuyibe, McGonigle, Williams and Allen took 10th place in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Allen anchored the team, recording the relay's fastest split (57.33).

The indoor team will take a break from competition for finals and the holidays. The squad returns to action in Blacksburg, Va. at the Hokie Invitational on January 18.
