PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Richmond fell to Saint Joseph's, 82-62, Saturday at Hagan Arena in each teams' conference opener.
Richmond fell to 10-7, 0-1, while St. Joseph's improved to 10-5, 1-0.
The Spiders only trailed St. Joseph's 36-31 at the break, but the Hawks pushed the pace early in the second frame, boosting their lead to 47-35 at the 16:19 mark. Richmond would get to within a 68-57 deficit with 6:46 left but could get no closer.
Richmond's supporting cast accounted for the point production, with two-sport star Becca Wann posting a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. The 19 points was the second-highest point total for Wann this season. Amber Nichols scored 12 points and went 6-for-7 from the field in 14 minutes of play.
In the first frame, Richmond found itself down 21-13 at the 8:01 mark but pieced together a 14-4 run to reclaim the lead at 27-25 with 3:28 remaining. The first-half run was led by senior Rachael Bilney's drives to the lane for the easy buckets. Bilney led Richmond with 10 points at the break. After a 3-of-13 start from the field, Richmond ended the half with 13-of-32 shooting (40.6%).
Richmond hosts St. Bonaventure Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
