UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Day one of the 6th Annual Fred Hardy Invitational commenced at Robins Stadium on Friday, where redshirt-senior Andrew Benford, senior Nicol Traynor, junior Beth Kelly, and junior Meaghan McGovern all clinched first-place in their individual events.
Nicol Traynor came in first and set a meet and facility record with her time of 4:31.17 in the 1,500m run. Her performance ranks as 48th in the NCAA, 22nd in the Eastern Region and second in the Atlantic 10 Conference for the outdoor season. Freshman Alli Mannon came in second-place (4:39.85), and sophomore Lydia Morton finished seventh (4:48.07).
Andrew Benford captured first in the 3,000m steeplechase. He finished in 8:56.87, setting the meet record. His time ranks as the third-best performance in the NCAA for the 2011 outdoor season, in addition to being second in the Eastern Region and first in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Beth Kelly placed first in the 5,000m run (17:24.98), followed by redshirt-senior Jenn Ennis in a close second (17:27.85). Junior Emma Berry came in seventh-place (18:22.16), while freshman Liz Schinski finished ninth (18:52.11).
As for the field events, Meaghan McGovern captured first in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 52.32m. Freshman Grace Gibson finished third in the pole vault competition with a mark of 3.25m, and senior X'auntasia Johnson placed second in the triple jump (11.77m). Johnson's mark stands at 75th in the nation, 50th in the region, and second in the Atlantic 10.
The second and final day of competition begins Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with field events, followed by track events at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free and concessions will be open on the West concourse.
