RECRUITING AREAS

Bob Trott begins his fifth-consecutive year in 2014 as the Spiders' defensive coordinator and his second season under head coach Danny Rocco.  A long-time coaching veteran at both the college and professional level, Trott brings over 35 years of experience to the Richmond staff.

"Bob has an outstanding resume," said Rocco.  "I first met him when he was with the New England Patriots about 10-12 years ago.  Bob has the respect of the players here and is very well like by the players here.  He has a depth and value in his overall knowledge of the defense and we're glad he's decided to stay."

Prior to the start of the 2014 training camp, Trott was selected as an assistant head coach for the U.S. U-19 National Team that traveled to Kuwait to win the IFAF World Championship against Canada, 40-17.

In 2013, the Richmond defense was once again among the national leaders in interceptions, leading the CAA with 17.  Individually, the Spider defense saw five players recognized as All-CAA performers.  DL Evan Kelly was named Second-Team All-CAA, while DB Wayne Pettus, DL Kerry Wynn, LB Eric Wright and LB Aaron Roaned were all named to the third team.

The 2012 campaign was a great one for the Spider defense, as Richmond led the nation in both interceptions (24) and in turnover margin (+22).  Individually, five players earned All-CAA recognition, while DB Cooper Taylor was named an All-American by six different media outlets.

In 2010, Richmond ranked in the Top 30 in the NCAA in scoring defense, while LB Eric McBride earned CAA Football Defensive Player of the Year honors, DB Justin Rogers was drafted by the Buffalo Bills and DL Martin Parker was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants.

In 2009 at Virginia, Trott mentored Cavalier linebacker Steve Greer, who finished sixth in the ACC in tackles per game (7.7), as UVa was ranked sixth in the ACC (and 52nd nationally) in total defense (358.4 yards/game).

Prior to his 2009 stint at UVa, Trott spent the previous four years as a defensive assistant/linebackers coach for Romeo Crennel at the Cleveland Browns. His coaching resume includes other NFL experience with the New England Patriots from 1993 to 1995 and the New York Giants from 1991 to 1992. At both of those franchises, he worked as a defensive assistant while Al Groh was the team's defensive coordinator for at least one season.

A 1976 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Trott was a three-year letterman at safety for the Tar Heels.

Trott's college coaching resume also includes stops as the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach at Louisiana-Monroe from 2003-2004, as the defensive coordinator at Baylor (2002), Duke (1996-2001), Clemson (1990) and Arkansas (1984-1989), as a defensive assistant at Air Force (1978-83) and as the graduate assistant at UNC (1976-77).

Trott's resume includes 12 bowl appearances as a player or coach. At Arkansas, the Razorbacks won Southwest Conference titles in 1988 and 1989. His only season as the defensive coordinator at Clemson, the Tigers led the nation in total defense, allowing just 217 yards per game.

Trott hails from Kannapolis, N.C., where he attended A.L. Brown High School. He played safety at North Carolina, and served as a senior captain in his final season. He also excelled in the classroom, making the Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team in 1975. He received a bachelor's degree in business from UNC in 1976 and in 1982 was awarded a master's degree in education.

Trott and his wife, Barbara, have three children, Amanda, Nathan and Brittany.
