Goens came to the Spiders after three seasons as an assistant coach at Roanoke College in his hometown of Salem, Va. While at Roanoke, he served as the recruiting coordinator and managed all fund-raising efforts for the team. On the field, he was the pitching coach for two seasons and instructed the hitters and outfielders his first year on staff.

Prior to Roanoke, he was an assistant coach at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. for three years and also possesses 13 years of high-school coaching experience. While at Newberry, he served as the recruiting coordinator and was the team's academic advisor, in addition to his on-field responsibilities.

Goens holds a sports management degree from Newberry College and earned his master's degree in sport administration from Western Kentucky in 2011.
