UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Kendall Anthony was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches, while senior Darrius Garrett was selected to the A-10 All-Defensive Team. The Spider tandem's selections were announced by the conference office on Monday.
Richmond's leading bench scorer and second-overall point producer with 13.4 tallies per game, Anthony becomes the second Spider to earn Rookie of the Year accolades following Kevin Anderson's selection in 2008. The four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week opened his Spider career with a 20-point performance against American and has reached double-figures in 22 of Richmond's 31 contests this season. This production consists of four 20-point outings, including a 21-point display in the Spiders' win over Wake Forest on Dec. 3.
Anthony was selected to the league's All-Rookie squad after turning in a season-high 21 tallies three times to this point in his rookie campaign. A proven threat on the perimeter, the Jackson, Tenn., product currently ranks fourth in the league in both three-point percentage (43.3%) and three-pointers per game (2.2) in addition to ranking ninth at the free throw line with an .800 average.
Garrett's All-Defensive nod is the first of his career and the third straight for a Spider.earned the honor a year ago and David Gonzalvez received All-Defensive honors in 2010. The defensive standout owns each of Richmond's block records, having set the single-game (14), single-season (104) and career (228) swats over the course of his illustrious four years on campus.
The Raleigh native has skied for a team-best 3.3 blocks per game this season, which ranks second in the league, while also leading the team with 6.5 rebounds in 2011-12.
Anthony, Garrett and the defending Atlantic 10 Champion Spiders return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they visit La Salle for their first-round conference tournament matchup with the Explorers.
