UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After posting a terrific start for the Richmond Spiders this past Saturday, freshman pitcher Zak Sterling was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced. The honor is the first for Sterling in his career.
"Zak came up big for us on Saturday, giving us another quality start," Spider head coach Mark McQueen said. "I was very pleased with how he pitched and I'm also happy for him to receive this conference honor."
This past Saturday against Quinnipiac, Sterling tossed a strong 7.2 shutout innings for the Spiders. The Salisbury, Md. native surrendered just three hits on the afternoon, striking out four batters on his way to improving his record on the season to 2-0.
Sterling has made three appearances this season for Richmond, making a start for the Spiders the past two weekends. On the year, Sterling has posted a 2.08 ERA, striking out 14 batters in 17.1 innings pitched. The lefty is allowing opponents to hit just .175 against him so far this year.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action this Tuesday when the team will play host to the George Mason Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Pitt Field.
