UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond rallied to beat rival GW, 18-17, Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
The Colonials threatened late when they had the ball with 20 seconds left, but a costly turnover and ground ball by Richmond sealed the win.
The competitive, close game never saw either team lead by more than two goals. The score was tied seven times. Richmond trailed 10-9 at the break, but scored three pivotal goals to open the second frame to gain momentum at 12-10 with 24 minutes left in the game.
Following Stevenson and Fifield's scoring brilliance was Mary Flowers' hat trick. Flowers also had a head-turning 10 draw controls, four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Freshman Janie Penney recorded nine draw controls, while classmate Emily Doyle added four assists.
Victoria Roebuck had a game-high 13 saves, including nine in the second half. Richmond won the draw, 24-13.
The Spiders return to action next Friday, Apr. 15 at Robins Stadium as they take on the Explorers of La Salle. Richmond will be honoring Friends of Jaclyn honoree Katie Schools before the game. First draw is at 4 p.m.
