University of Richmond, Va. --The Spiders women's tennis team has been playing a record number of tight matches with 7 of their 13 decisions being won or lost by one point.

Today they were on the receiving end of a tough loss to the 49ers, 4-3.

"We competed hard and our training has been solid," says Head Coach Mark Wesselink. "We're looking forward to getting freshman and No. 2 player, Melissa Kandinata back in the line-up. If we're healthy, I still like our chances but Charlotte was too tough today. We will have to play better at A-10's."

Despite Joanna Matuszczyk and Nil Horoz's 8-4 win in doubles play, Richmond could not secure the doubles point.

In singles play, senior Joanna Matuszczyk defeated Alexandra Zinn 6-4, 6-1 while senior Helen Cunningham downed her opponent 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Alexandra Smyth earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Anna Ekulund.

The Spiders are 4-3 in one point decision matches and 9-4 overall. Coach Wesselink sees a bright spot in the challenging wins and losses.

Wesselink states, "This is exactly what we need to get us mentally tough for the A-10 tournament. Playing under pressure can only be done in match situations. I doubt any other A-10 team has had so many pressure matches."

The team is back in action next Tuesday, April 10 at UMBC before finishing their season at home on Senior Day next Thursday, April 12, at 2pm.

The Spiders travel to the Boar's Head Inn, April 19-22 for the A-10 Championships. They hope to defend their winning streak of 3 straight championships.
