PHILADELPHIA - On what was a dreary day in the heart of Philadelphia on Thursday, Spider senior Meaghan McGovern shined with her near school-record showing in the hammer throw at the Penn Relays.

After opening the event with a long of 55.73 meters through her first five throws, McGovern (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) unleashed for a personal-best toss of 56.24 meters (184-6) on her sixth and final hurl to finish second in the College section of the hammer. Her PR, which was less than .20 meters off Beth Crocus' school-record of 56.42 meters set in 2006, was two full meters further than her winning toss at last year's Penn Relays.

McGovern's throw currently ranks 30th in the NCAA East Region heading into nationwide competition this weekend. Her toss will likely land her a spot in May's First Round of the NCAA Championship in Jacksonville, Fla.

Up next for McGovern and the Spiders are the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, scheduled for May 5-6 on the campus of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.
