UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Continuing Spider Track & Field's longstanding tradition of excellence both on the track and in the classroom, seniors Devin Cassels and Meaghan McGovern were named to the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Academic All-Conference team by the conference office this past week. With the pair's selection, Richmond was just one of three schools to have both a men's and women's student-athlete chosen to the list.
Cassels (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) reset his school record in the pole vault with his fifth-place finish of 4.50 meters at the A-10 Championship earlier this month. The senior standout tallied four top-five showings over the course of the spring, including a third-place performance in his final home appearance at the Spiders' annual Fred Hardy Invitational that broke a school record that had stood for nearly four decades.
This is Cassels' second academic all-conference selection after he earned indoor accolades in March. He completed his collegiate career with the program's highest cumulative GPA, earning a 3.83 final GPA as a Mathematical Economics major.
McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) wrapped up her hammer throw career at Richmond with her third-consecutive NCAA East Preliminary Round appearance in which she finished just one spot outside of Nationals qualification in 13th and bettered her own school record with a hurl of 57.41 meters. She originally set the program mark with her top finish of 57.03 meters at the A-10 Championship. McGovern, who recorded four top-three finishes this spring and was named the league's Women's Performer of the Week after securing silver at April's Penn Relays, also ends her decorated career at Richmond as the meet and facility record-holder at the Fred Hardy Invite.
McGovern's academic all-conference selection is the first of her four years as a Spider. She was tabbed to the team after earning a 3.37 cumulative GPA as an International Studies/Africa Studies major.
To be nominated for the A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Academic All-Conference team, a student-athlete must have represented their program with athletic accomplishments while also maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better for his or her entire academic career. Selections were made through voting conducted by the league's sports information directors.
