The Spiders, who began playing men's basketball in the 1913-14 season, have enjoyed national success and will put that tradition on display with festivities marking the 100th Anniversary of Spider Basketball.
A 100 Years of Spider Basketball logo has been unveiled to tip-off the season-long trip down memory lane. The logo will be prominently displayed including on the Spiders' uniforms, painted on the Robins Center court and raised to the arena's rafters.
At home games throughout the season, 15 of the greatest moments in Spider basketball history will be highlighted with memorabilia, radio highlights, and legendary former players and coaches returning to the Robins Center. Richmond will also wear a specially designed throwback uniform by Nike during selected home games.
The celebration tips off at the home opener Friday Nov. 9 when the E. Claiborne Robins family is recognized for their contributions to the men's basketball program and the Robins Center, home of the Spiders for the past 40 seasons.
Fans will play an interactive role in the 100 Years of Spider Basketball celebration, as they will have the opportunity to help select the All-Time Spider Basketball Team, which will be recognized during the season. A web site devoted to the 100 Years of Spider Basketball will be created where fans can view their favorite moments via photo and video galleries, interact with other fans and vote for their favorite Spiders.
Season ticket holders and fans will also enjoy special giveaways throughout the season, including bobble heads of former Spider greats Johnny Newman, Justin Harper, and Kevin Anderson, a special 100-year poster and retro apparel. Game programs will feature 100 year memories and merchandise will be sold with the 100 Years of Spider Basketball logo.
