UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After capturing 10 conference titles in 11 years and fielding a number of NCAA Championship and Olympic Trials qualifiers in recent years, Richmond Swim & Dive has come to be recognized for its success in the water. On Tuesday, however, the Spiders were honored for their continued record of excellence in the classroom, receiving their fourth-straight Scholar All-America Team designation from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
"These awards stretch beyond the water," said head coach Matt Barany. "These women have made huge sacrifices to excel in the classroom and in the water. It's awesome for them to receive this recognition."
The Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming & diving teams that have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Spiders' 3.38 cumulative GPA for Spring Semester 2012 was not only the highest on record under Barany, but the highest of any sport on campus and of all women's swim & dive programs in the Atlantic 10 as well.
The program was also lauded this week when 12 of its 18 women were recognized on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. The designation is given to any conference student-athlete who maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher for the spring semester. Three Spiders in seniors Lauren Hines and Mina Vucic and junior Mali Kobelja garnered academic all-conference honors this spring as well.
