Winston-Salem, N.C- The Spider women's tennis team finished a full day of play at the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday Oct. 5.
Sophomore Melissa Kandinata lost to Appalachian State's Ellie Linsell 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the singles group A draw. Kandinata will take on Charlotte's Anna Ekelund in the semifinal consolation.
Junior Elizabeth Sims and freshman Emily Gitman both are 1-0 in the singles group B draw, while freshman Katya Salas is 1-0 in the singles group C. . Sims defeated Navy's Erin Snook 6-2, 7-5.Gitman beat Campbell's Anna Ortiz 7-5, 6-2. Gitman and Sims will both be competing in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Salas struggled against Navy's Darien Sears in the first set but won 7-6. In the second set Salas blanked Sears 6-0.
Sophomore Georgina Pons- Cano advanced to the quarterfinals in the F single's group after a win against Navy's Cassie Fisbeck 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Anna Abadias fell to Stetson's Lindsey Cable in a close match 7-5, 7-6. Mariana Arana is also 0-1 in the tournament after losing to West Virginia's Vivian Tsui 7-5, 6-4 in the single's E group.
In double's action Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas went 0-2 in the A doubles grouping. The pair were defeated by Elon's Khoury/Lazarova 8-4 in the first round and by Davidson's Moniz-Soares/Cummer. The pair will be competing in the 13th place bracket tomorrow against Campbell's Ortiz/Stanic.
Elizabeth Sims and Emily Gitman went 1-1 in double's play after defeating Campbell's Chernaya/Afridi 8-5 in the first round of play but then falling to Charlotte's Zinn/Takayanagi 8-5 in the quarterfinals. Sims and Gitman will compete in the fifth place bracket of the B group on Saturday.
In the C group double's action. Ana Abadias and Nil Horoz lost in the semifinals to Navy's Sears/ Fisbeck . The pair competes in the fifth place bracket on Sunday against UNC-Greensboro's Anane/Yurtkuran.
Mariana Arana and Ripley Hartmeyer went 1-1 on the day defeating Appalachian State's Gabriel/ Shell 8-1 in the opening round but falling to UNC-Greensboro's Ellis/Grinerg in a close match 9-8. The duo will battle for third place in the double's group D against Charlotte's Johnson and Perez.
The Spiders continue singles and doubles tournament play tomorrow.
