UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- The women's tennis team heads up north to Philadelphia for three matches this weekend.
The Spiders play in conference rival Temple on Friday at noon. Followed by a Saturday dual with St. Joseph's. The squad concludes with a match against Pennsylvania at noon on Sunday.
This weekend marks the squads first two A-10 dual matches. Temple is predicted to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10, while St. Joseph's was picked to finish 13th. The Spiders were voted to finish second in the conference.
Temple is on a two match-losing streak, after falling to no. 49 Penn State and no. 72 Princeton. St. Joseph's dropped a decision, 6-1, against A-10 rival UMass last weekend. Penn swept their matches against Lehigh and St. Joseph's 7-0.
The Spider's are looking to expand their winning record after handily defeating Longwood 6-1 last weekend. Sophomore Melissa Kandinata blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in a nearly perfect match. Her performance earned her an Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week nod.
In doubles the Spiders won at all three positions. The freshman duo of Anna Abadias and Katya Salas won 8-3 at the no. 1 position, while the experienced pair of Kandinata and Alexandra Smyth handily won 8-1 at the no. 2 position.
