UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond begins its 2013 season hosting No. 4 Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
"We're excited knowing that every game will bring new challenges and push us to continue fighting and getting better," said Evans. "It doesn't get easier as we head into A-10 play but I'm confident in this team and the determination of our senior class to bring home a Championship."
The Spiders start out with a bang facing four ACC opponents in an 11-day span. They kickoff the season at home against Maryland on February 10, then travel to Tobacco Road where they face the top teams in North Carolina with Duke and UNC. Their final ACC opponent, UVA, travels to Richmond on February 20.
Before entering conference play, the Spiders will also face CAA opponents, ODU, JMU, No.17 Towson, and William and Mary. The road to the A-10 Championship begins on March 29 when the Spiders face the Colonials of George Washington University.
The Spiders return nine starters from last year's 10-8 squad which finished second in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Senior captain Caitlin Fifield led the Spiders with 60 goals last season and will return to the Richmond attack alongside fellow senior and second-team All Conference performer, Kara Moschetti. Moschetti tallied 29 goals and recorded 24 ground balls in 2012. Rounding out the experienced attacking unit is All-Rookie honoree, Emily Doyle, who returns after having a breakout year during her freshman campaign. Doyle led the team with 31 assists. Against A-10 rival Temple University, Doyle tallied seven assists setting a single-game record for the Spiders.
All Conference first-team selection Sam Stevenson will lead the midfield. Stevenson scored 55 goals and dished 25 assists for 80 points last season. Stevenson is a dynamic midfielder who possesses the ability to be a spark on both ends of the field. Joining her is another senior, Jen Zoltoski. Zoltoski moves up to the midfield this year where her power compliments a fast and aggressive midfield line-up. Junior Hayley Ross, sophomore Jess Miller and a pair of freshmen, Emily Newman and Catherine McTiernan round out a deep midfield.
Senior captain Tara Coyle will quarterback an experienced defensive unit for the 2013 squad. Supporting her is All Conference second-team honoree, Taylor Blazer. In her sophomore season Blazer grabbed 31 ground balls, 12 draw controls and caused six turnovers before suffering a season-ending injury. Anna Jeszeck will be a staple in this year's defense as she gained valuable experience last year where she earned 12 starts as a freshman.
