Men's Tennis Splits Pair of Close Matches

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider men's tennis team split a pair of road matches this weekend, losing 5-2 to Georgetown on Saturday but bouncing back to defeat University of Maryland Baltimore County 5-2.

"Even though we were on the losing side, we made some improvements, " said head coach Ben Johnson. "Our doubles game is starting to come together, which was a major focus for us in previous weeks."

In the match against Georgetown the Spiders started the day off strong, winning the doubles point.  Sebastien Fauchet and Jesse Feder won 8-5 at the number one position, while Ethan Dunbar and Paul Nahon III secured an 8-3 victory at the number three spot.

In singles action the Spiders won two of the six points but took four of the matches to three sets.  Ethan Dunbar defeated Charlie Caris 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 a the number one position, while Sebastien Fauchet won the Spiders second point 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2) at the number five position.   Richmond fell 4-3 in a tight match against the Hoyas.

Richmond turned their game around on Sunday, securing a 5-2 win over UMBC.   The team won the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 position.  Wicker and Trent won 8-4 at the No. 2 spot while Dunbar and Nahon earned an 8-7 win at the No. 3 spot.

"It was good to get the win, especially taking the doubles point and having the top of the line up play well," said Johnson.

The Spiders swept the top three singles positions.  Ethan Dunbar won 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 1 position, earning his second win of the weekend.  Feder played Melker Savard in an exciting three set duel, coming out with on top with a  2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Paul Nahon blanked Alex Drean 6-0 in the first set and won the second 6-1 for the win at the No. 3 position.

The Spiders will be back in action for a three-match road swing in Ohio on March 10. The Spiders will take on Dayton on March 10.
